Awaiting my 2nd bundle of joy

Almost exactly two years after my 1st bundle of joy turn into a cheeky toddler, 'terrible two' that many called one, I'm expecting another one to join us to make this a noiser and messier home. I find balancing my limited time amongst family, work, investing, blogging and photography a very difficult task, especially when I need to dedicate much more time amongst the first 3. I am aware of my priorities, as much as I need to make tangible investments from the resouces generated from my work, I also need to make intangible investment of my time in my family. Thus blogging and photography (the only 'brainless' hobby that I can indulge in to let my brain rest) will have to take a back seat. If opportunities arose, I will still write an article or two. Otherwise, it will be a long while before I can return to serious blogging. I thank all faithful readers and fellow value investment bloggers who have contributed invaluable comments and ideas, and made my investment journey so far a very rewarding one!

Hi Market Uncle,

I recall an exchange we had over Surface Mount Tech about 2.5 years ago in 2008. Are you still holding on to shares of this Company?

The Company just released a profit warning today (May 23, 2011) and said they had to write down values of their PPE and thus will recognize a very substantial impairment loss. This, in essence, is the value trip as NAV may not fully capture the value of the Company, especially if the business is declining. Surface Mount is going to report three consecutive years of losses including year-ended March 31, 2011.

Musicwhiz

Hi Musicwhiz,
I've sold it at a loss quite sometime ago during my last major restructuring of my portfolio in the midst of the global financial crisis. I liquidated very significant number of my less promising companies, esp cigar butts like surface mount, when really very good businesses suddenly got sold off at very attractive, once in a lifetime price.

As far as surface mount is concerned, the rightdown apply to its PPE. So if someone ignored intangibles, and only focus on its tangibles, i.e. working out NTA (not NAV) and take the share price as a steep discount, then he will be in for a shocker here. Unfortuantely, I'm one of those as well. I always thought all assets on the balance sheet must be tested periodically to reflect the 'current' worth. So the sudden impairment points towards accouting failure here?

Anyway, since they already reported 3 consecutive years of losses? Not too sure whether they'll be delisted.

I remember this feeling. And I was warned that 1 + 1 is much more than 2. They are right. The energy consumption is just amazing. How I wish money is compounded that way!
